Tred Barta Bio

Captain Tred Barta Bio

Tred Barta is the modern-day Ernest Hemingway, an outdoor sportsman, blue water fisherman, rancher, hunter, television host and personality, and prolific author, holding world records in both light-tackle saltwater fishing and big game hunting.

Tred is both believable and credible; he is of the highest moral character and the voice of hard-working men and women across the world, who enjoy outdoor adventure, sport-fishing, wild game, and a love of the hunt.

Tred attended the University of Colorado where he raced Alpine and Nordic Combined. He is a fierce competitor and won the Junior Biathlon Championships, after which he trained with the U.S. Olympic Biathlon Team.Bigeye Tuna World Record 215.lbs. Shinnecock, New York

Tred chose and continues to live “the hard way . . . the barta way,” as seen on the VERSUS Network hit television show, The Best and Worst of Tred Barta. He took up longbow hunting and light tackle fishing, quickly becoming an expert in both. Tred has broken and now holds numerous world-records across disciplines.

Tred’s love of adventure isn’t limited to the wilderness, the rivers, the badlands, or the high seas; he is a turboprop and jet pilot having over 7500 hours as a pilot-in-command with 22 ocean crossings.

Tred holds a multitude of bow hunting records in Rowland Ward, his 382 lb. 16 – 16 ½ tusk wart hog shot in Africa with the bow defeated the great honorable Fred Bear’s record set in 1952 and still stands to this day.

Tred also holds records for Blesbok, Dik-Dik, Impala, Whitetail etc. A caribou harvested in Northern Ungava with a longbow scored 401 5/0, at one time a world record, now in the top 10.

Tred Barta is credited worldwide with catching more big eye tuna than any man alive on rod and reel.

Tred has been credited as the modern-day pioneer of canyon fishing, developing and perfecting many of the techniques now common in the sport. He is credited with early confirmation that warm core eddies existed and were key to blue water fishing success worldwide. Tred’s specific techniques on how to find and fish warm core eddies are the modern standard in the sport.

Tred’s light tackle career is legendary, holding at one time or another double-digit International Game and Fishing Association (IGFA) world records on light line. Tred was the only man to ever hold the triple crown of light tackle tuna records – a 65 lb. yellowfin on 6 lb. line landed after 3 hours of solid effort, a 63 ½ lb. bluefin tuna on 12 lb. line, and a 215 lb. big eye tuna on 20 lb. line landed in 5 hours and 17 minutes – still unbroken after 20 years.
Tred is an expert fly-fisherman, period, having fly-fished all over the world. His 38.6 lb. dolphin is the existing world record on 6-lb. tippet.

Over the last ten years, Tred has become a teacher and educator; he is the unmitigated voice of blue water fishing. Tred made a decision a long time ago not to be short sighted when it comes to sponsors and money. He shuns any product or endorsement he refuses to use, and he will only promote a product he has personally “battle-tested” in the field.

Tred feels most television and outdoor celebrities are over endorsed, and as a result, have lost their credibility. To quote Tred, “If you stand for everything, you stand for nothing.”

As a result of non-stop writing for 27 years in almost every sports publication, his Barta Blue Marlin Classic (BBMC), which has become one of the most successful tournaments in the world, Tred has earned and enjoys an unparalleled endorsement from the industry, the press, the OEM’s, and the manufacturers as the most credible voice of blue water fishing. The man cannot be bought off and sticks to his bows!

Over the last seven years, the BBMC has raised one million dollars for the IGFA Junior Angler’s Program.

Tred Barta’s new tournament, the Barta Boys and Girls Billfish Tournament in Beaufort, North Carolina has raised $600,000 in just two years with a pledge to raise a second $1 million dollars for the Boys and Girls Club of Coastal Carolina. There is no one in the hunting and fishing industry today with a track record like this.

Tred’s mottoes for all of his tournaments are “Families who hunt and fish together stay together” and “There is nothing more important than the way we treat each other.”

Regarded as some of the best in the world and attended by world renowned anglers, Tred’s tournaments offer no cash prizes. Instead, Tred invented the “your word is your bond” honor scoring system, and all Tred’s tournaments are catch and release.

Tred has a deep background in boat manufacturing with an excellent understanding of boat and hull design, managing several 60 to 70 ft. custom vessels from beginning to end of construction.

Tred is the most prolific published outdoor writer today. He has authored one of the best selling books in outdoor sports writing, The Best and Worst of Tred Barta, and has a second book on the way.

The book led to the top rated outdoor show on Versus Network (soon to be NBC Sport) and is shown prime time Sunday evenings, also called, “The Best and Worst of Tred Barta”. The show is in its 9th season of production.

In May 2009, Tred suffered a rare spinals stroke and soon learned he had a rare blood cancer. The Versus network kept with him and his shows now are full of inspiration for his viewing public. His sayings “The Hard Way….The Barta Way” and “Never, never, ever….give up” now have been truly tested and proven unfailingly. He has added an additional fan base, who are finding inspiration in the way Tred has adapted to his current situation. He is paralyzed from the armpits down, but still continues to find ways to hunt with a longbow, the hardest possible way and can still pull in 200# plus billfish. However, he has moved exclusively to light tackle fishing and now is setting new records in that arena.

He continues to sell corporate aircraft, with his family business since 1947, Barta Iso Aviation, film the TV shows, write for Sportfishing Magazine and Big Game Fishing Journal . He has also learned to snow ski again on a mono-ski, ride his retrained horse, and now scuba dive. His enthusiasm and zest for life are truly infectious. He has added: “You can hurry up living , or hurry up dying, the choice is yours.
